Diabetes

When I was pregnant with Oscar - quite late into the pregnancy - I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes.  That's why (I think ) he was so big (9lbs 14).  A year after he was born I had to have another test - and I had a "pre-diabetic condition" -my fasting blood sugar was abnormally high but I managed to process sugar ok. With Toby, I was prepared - from the moment I knew I was pregnant I followed a low-GI diabetic diet in order to ensure he was small and I could have a natural birth.

I had the GTT test at about 20 weeks and again had GD but this time really bad. I lost weight when pregnant - ate hardly any sugar or carbs (was told off by my midwife!) but I couldn't control my blood sugar. I had to inject insulin and I also seemed to have insulin tolerance as I had to inject TONS of the stuff - 2 injections full at a time to get enough insulin in me to keep my blood sugar low. It was amazing that Tobes was only 8lbs 4....I had to have an insulin injection throughout delivery (scheduled c-section) and therefore I was dreading my year later GTT....

I got the results today. NORMAL!!! Wahooo! I was convinced I'd still be in a pre-diabetic condition but almost certain that it would be worse than before I was pg with Toby. Instead it's better. Might be because I've lost 17lbs recently (and am still going) and am a lot more active than before (you try dealing with my 2 hyper kids!).

So good news. I'm so happy! Wish I could go and stuff my face with donuts but that would blow the diet!!!

Long time no blog...

I've been crap I know....but I just don't have any time any more!! (like most of us I think). Toby is a real handful at the moment....and he's been a bit poorly - just colds and an MMR reaction (which was like flu) but it means he's really clingy. Plus whenever I'm on the computer he comes up and starts either bashing on the keyboard or dismantling the printer!!!

All is ticking along fine here though. Oz is great - got his new bike finally (we meant to get it for christmas) and he loves it. Just wish the weather would pick up so we could go to the park more. Toby isn't walking yet (lazy blighter) but now crawls on his hands and feet, not knees so he's half way there. We're nit free...at the moment....Had to check Oz every day but luckily the rest of the family escaped. Used tea tree oil - thanks for all the tips - I've seen that wonder comb for a £10 in boots but having spent nearly £20 on shampoo, repellent and conditioner, I'll wait till the next outbreak!

I got an acting job - some of you saw on Facebook. I've got a one line part in the new Jane (the piano) Campion film Bright Star. It's period so that will be fun on the costume front. Still don't know when it's filming but it'll be a day's work and nice to be an actor again. Have also had a couple of auditions which means my agent has remembered my name! I've also been back to Weight Watchers and have lost 19lbs in the last few weeks so that's all good (though I miss chocolate).  Here are a few pics....will try and be more interesting and up to date - I have been reading everyone's blogs but I don't always have time to comment!! Life eh? Can't imagine what it's like for those of you with more than 2 little ones - I can't keep up with my two let alone more!

It's heartbreaking. My sister is gay and lives in America. Her marriage isn't recognised. Her immigration status is permanently precarious. I hope this message reaches a lot of people in America and makes them think.

Nits!!!

Oscar has them -our first experience of this. Got back from an outing to the planetarium today and he was asleep on the couch and woke up scratching like mad....I had a look and EU!!!  Little grey buggers crawling about. LOADS of them!  Must have got them at preschool (I'll have words after half term) as the chemist said they take up to 10 days to hatch....

He's currently wearing a headful of First Marks (I think that was the brand) shampoo and in 5 minutes I'm going to comb them out....Oscar can't wait to see dead bugs.

So - you mothers with experience - any tips? Do these shampoo things work (bloody expensive - £11 a bottle!!!!) or should I just comb them out?

My head itches now.....not sure if I've got em or not. YUK!!!!

Yes he's one today - can't believe it. (Thank you Moxie for his card!!)

I'm full of flu so this will be short. Cake was decorated last night when my temperature was quite high - can you tell? Lovely day even though I had to retreat to bed this afternoon while my Mum looked after them - not so different from last year - spending his birthday in bed!

Can't believe how much cake he ate!!! Followed by scrambled egg on toast. He can eat like his mother....

Did you meet any new friends this year?  Yes - some new mummy chums and some work people
Did any of your friendships end? Yes - someone I'd been through the end of my first pregnancy with and was very close to - but realised we didn't have anything in common apart from our kids and she wasn't worth it.
Did you dislike anyone? No - I pity the ex-friend but haven't the energy or inclination to bother disliking her!
Did you make any new enemies? I hope not
Did you resolve any fights? I never really resolved the above situation - just decided not to worry about it (ostrich I suppose!)
Who was your closest friend? Moxie
Who did you grow apart from? A few mum chums as I made new friends with Oz's new pre-school
Do you have any regrets when it comes to your friendships?  I wish, like everyone, I had more time to devote to my friends but I think the good ones understand and we'll just pick up where we left off when we see eachother - and have more to talk about!

Did you dye your hair?  Yes - bright red - the same as this font! I've been trying to re-blondify ever since but I'm glad I did it.

Did you change your style? I did have a bit of a Pob....but I'm going to grow it long again now

Did you have a job? Yes - two part time ones for a magazine and teaching preschool music

Did anyone close to you give birth? Yes! Quite a few, myself included.

Would you change anything about yourself now? Yes - lose weight - I'm way heavier than before having the babies and I'm not happy

 

2007 Wrap Up...
Was 2007 a good year? It was a hard year. Wonderful because Toby arrived and harder than any because Toby arrived. Found it much harder being a mum the second time around (unlike most people I think). The first 7 months were so hard until he started sleeping. Wanted to run away at times but got through it thanks to supportive friends like people reading this! And then the end of the year was awful with Toby in hospital and Rob so very very ill.
Did 2007 bring any new insights? That it does get better as you go on

Do you think 2008 will top 2007? I'm sure it will. 

Do you have any goals for 2008? To get thinner and healthier.
If you could go back and change any moment which would you choose from 2007? I would skip the illnesses in November - that was awful and Rob still isn't 100%
